In my humble 40 years of existence, the fact that you @tweeted back says it all. For some of us it's not about what we achieved on paper or the prosperity it brought us. What motivates us is our will and our need to make a connection with someone or something. A very brief yet acknowledge moment can pack more emotional power than any material acquisition and leave us hanging and hungry for more.

I'll echo the customary "me too", and add this sentiment:

"At the time I should have liked to marry, my music was either hissed in the concert hall or received with icy coldness. Now for myself, I could bear that quite well, because I knew its worth, and that someday the tables would be turned. And when after such failures I entered my lonely room, I was not unhappy. But if in such moments I had to meet the anxious, questioning eyes of a wife with the words "Another failure...", I could not have born that. For a woman may love an artist ever so much; still, she cannot possibly have that perfect certainty of the eventual victory which is in his heart. And if she had wanted to comfort me - a wife to pity her husband for his lack of success? I couldn't stand to think what hell that would have been!" - Johannes Brahms

Reinforcement from others is nice, and everyone loves to receive it. But the most powerful, enduring, meaningful kind of reinforcement is the kind that comes from within, generated by absolute certainty in yourself. Self-acceptance generates a kind of confidence and contentment that no others' appreciation could match.

I know exactly how you feel. Manipulating people comes as easy to me as breathing, but as far as relationships, I absolutely refuse. If you act in an extremely unnatural way to get what you want in love, eventually, she'll see the pained, hopeless soul under the confident facade - you can't keep your guard up forever. More importantly, however, I'm striving for something real, and in order to get it, I have to be real as well as her, no matter how much it hamstrings me. A large part of the transcendence of mutual love is knowing that it's safe to drop your guard.
