Lenka

Knock another one off the bucket list: saw Lenka perform last Friday. The venue (Rickshaw Stop) was a little odd, with rickety rickshaws that were questionable for sitting (ask Liz), but it was an intimate venue with maybe 200 people there.  She lived up to expectations in that she could actually sing, and has an Australian accent to boot. A magical performance marred by the fact that the opener started an hour and a half late and just played a bunch of really depressing songs. The show was supposed to start at 8:30, but didn’t until 10, so it ended at midnight and I barely made it on one of the last Bart trains back. I think the opener’s downer songs might be on purpose to contrast with Lenka’s ebullient melodies. Or maybe there is no accounting for music.

Her set list was about half from the old album and half from the new. Loved “Trouble is a Friend” and “We Will Not Grow Old” from the former, but I’ve been listening to “Everything’s Okay” from the latter on repeat the past few days. What a great song.

Here’s an extra blurry picture because the camera on my phone sucks.

The top of the list of remaining artists that I want to see before I die:

  • Yo Yo Ma (seriously, why is it so hard to get tickets to his shows when he seems to perform nonstop?)
  • Radiohead
  • Sigur Ros
  • Alina Cojocaru
